The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) defines it this way, "Aromatherapy, also referred to as Essential Oil therapy, can be defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. It seeks to unify physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s innate healing process."
Aromatherapy is the study of plants and their essential oils, with a focus on how they can be used for a variety of therapeutic purposes. Using a strong foundation of chemistry and research, Clinical Aromatherapists blend essential oils for a variety of application methods, from topical (skin) application to inhalation. Despite common misconceptions, aromatherapy goes far beyond the concept of certain aromas being relaxing or stimulating. ~ Andrea Butje, founder of The Aromahead Insititute.
Aromatherapy refers to the inhalation and topical application of true, authentic essential oils from aromatic plants to restore or enhance health, beauty and well-being. The field of aromatherapy activity is quite wide, ranging from the deep and penetrating therapeutic actions of essential oils to the extreme subtlety of fragrance on the psyche. ~ Alliance of International Aromatherapists (AIA)
Aromatherapy is a branch of Phytotherapy (plant therapy) which also includes herbalism, homeopathy, Ayrveda, traditional Chinese medicine and others. It is a holistic healthcare practice concerning itself with the whole being. It concerns the whole of the person, body, mind and spirit and works to create balance. Aromatherapy, in the truest sense of the word, is the use of 100% natural, whole, unadulterated aromatic essences, essential oils, obtained by gentle steam distillation of flowers, leaves, branches, roots, barks seeds and resin or expressed oils (squeezing the oil from peels and rinds of citrus fruits) of specific botanical sources. It also utilizes nonvolatile carrier oils (fatty oils) found in avocados, coconuts and grape seeds. It also uses hydrosols, the aromatic waters that are co-produced during the gentle steam distillation of essential oils. The most important thing about aromatherapy is that the substances used for maintaining health be totally pure and from very specific plants.
What Aromatherapy is NOT!
Aromatherapy has been cheapened in recent years by mass marketers attempts to cash in on a renaissance of appreciation of plants and our connections to them. There are now many so-called "aromatherapy" products on the market that have about as much relevance to true aromatherapy as tin does to gold. Most of them carry synthetic fragrances, which do more harm than good. None of these counterfeit products get to the true character of aromatherapy, which is not just about smelling something. Genuine Aromatherapy is more ethereal and diffuse. It goes to the heart of the chemistry of the plants and their effects on our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual consciousness. The Jojoba Company
Aromatherapy is not the use of synthetic substances or fragrance oils. It is not the use of anything that simply "smells". Most items marketed as aromatherapy in department stores, health food stores, on pharmacy shelves or from cosmetic suppliers are NOT true aromatherapy. That doesn't mean they don't "smell" good but the bulk of them are not completely natural. Some may even contain ingredients linked to or suspected of causing serious health problems or allergic reactions. Isolating a single chemical component from a natural source can make a synthetic "smell" but could very well end up with a "smell" that harms. It is not the aroma that harms the chemical creation but it could have a negative effect on your health by causing headaches, skin irritation and sensitivity or allergies. By using only unpolluted, totally natural, unadulterated aromas the chances of negative health problems could be greatly reduced if not completely removed.
If you are genuinely interested in removing synthetic chemicals and processed products from your life, then CherMark Botanicals has the right products for you. The health and well being of our clients and customers are our priority.
